Meet a Partner: Nicklaus Children's Hospital

Welcome Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, our newest FPA Partner. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been an important asset in our community for decades serving half a million children and their families each year. One might query why the hospital might choose to be an FPA Partner. According to Julie Katz who heads up the hospital’s annual fund, “Everyone is a stakeholder in the hospital. Someone you know has been touched by our hospital.”

So what can we as shareholders do for the hospital? A 501(C)-3 non-profit foundation, Nicholaus Children’s Hospital provides research, care, teaching, literacy and a music/art/theatre center all geared to normalize the patient experience with a holistic view to serving the entire family. To that end goal, our FPA members can choose to participate in events, the corporate leadership program, or as volunteers. “Recommend us to the community,” said Joe Deary, Senior Director of Planned Giving.

Deary and Irene Richards, Planned Giving Coordinator both came to the hospital from careers in wealth management. After 30 years in the financial planning profession, Joe embarked on a second career with the hospital as he had seen firsthand, the joy of giving when making recommendations to his affluent clients on charitable donations. FPA of Miami and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital are a perfect fit. There’s something for everyone.

Become a corporate sponsor of an event. Volunteer your time. There are a myriad of opportunities that mesh with your professional goals as a planner and as a human being. A likely fit is FPA’s NextGen outreach in combination with the hospital’s event “Fashion Gives Back” which is geared to young professionals. Explore the myriad opportunities to give back to our community as stakeholders in Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Be sure to meet Joe Deary at one of our events and discuss how you may become a vital part of serving our community through the work of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

When asked why they do this work, Julie Katz, who is head of annual giving, gave credit to her grandfather who said, “Figure out what you love and find out how to get paid for it.” Julie loves her work and receives a lot of joy in guiding others to support the fundraising endeavors done on behalf of the children and their families. Look for more event-specific information that will be forthcoming in our newsletter on how you, your clients and your colleagues can experience the joy of giving to a worthy cause.
